How does a salt water softener work?
A salt water softener based on ion exchange always needs salt. This is necessary because the salt water softener has resin granules that exchange calcium and magnesium for sodium in the water. These resin granules are able to bind lime, making the water soft. The resin granules must be cleaned occasionally with a saltwater mixture (brine), because the resin granules become saturated and are no longer able to bind lime.
