Lime scale

Limescale is an unpleasant side effect of using a lot of water in the household. The bathroom, toilet and kitchen should be cleaned regularly to prevent limescale from becoming thicker and therefore more difficult to remove. Limescale deposits can easily be prevented with an anti-limescale system.

What is limescale?

Limescale consists of lime particles that deposit on a surface. This can vary from a white haze on your bathroom tiles to a thick, grainy layer of limescale on the heating element of your dishwasher.

How does limescale build up?

Limescale is caused by lime particles in the tap water depositing on a surface such as the shower wall or in household appliances such as the washing machine. You will recognize limescale as a white haze on surfaces in wet areas. Pipes and appliances that are difficult to clean from the inside even have a thick layer of limescale. The disadvantage of this limescale is not only that it often requires cleaning with expensive means to make surfaces shiny again, but also that appliances become less energy efficient. Layers of lime require more energy to get heating elements to the right temperature.

Hard water

When the lime content in the water reaches a certain limit, we call it 'hard water'. Water hardness is expressed in German Härte, abbreviated to dH. Limescale on your pipes and appliances already occurs at a water hardness of 2.8 dH, a hardness that quickly occurs in Dutch tap water.

Cleaning and descaling

You can clean regularly to prevent the white haze of limescale. With aggressive cleaning agents or cleaning vinegar you will not only remove limescale, but you may also damage your tiles, grout and chrome surfaces. These remedies are very acidic. However, descaling is necessary to keep your home clean and to ensure that appliances continue to work properly.

Prevent limescale

Prevention is better than cure, this certainly applies to limescale. You can prevent limescale with our tips and by installing an anti-limescale system.
